Twilights and Seminars - May and June

15th May - Free School Thinking 2 years on - BCSE Offices

On the 20th October 2010, BCSE launched a landmark publication called "Free Schools Thinking" at the House of Commons. We used Free Schools Thinking as a framework for freeing up thinking about the education system and the way schools work.  Sir Bruce Liddington described this publication as a 'seminal report'. There are currently 24 free schools in UK at the moment, 79 additional free schools were approved in outline in October 2011 and the controversy around free schools continues. The BCSE is going to hold a Twilight 'Chatham House Rule' discussion at our office on 15th May from 6pm to 8pm.

21st May - The future of POE - Manchester (tbc)

POE is a crucial tool when it comes to designing and building schools, especially at a time of austerity. We all know that we learn from past successes as well as failures. With a greater focus on POE we need to ensure that it does not become a tick box exercises. POE needs to be a usable and commercially viable tool which allows lessons on design and construction to be shared in an understandable way for both the industry and its education clients. Join our discussion in Manchester to discuss the future of POE and the role the BCSE can play in promoting and sharing POE evidence using it to inform a Decent School Standard.

29th May - Alternative provision for SEN and changing regulations - BCSE Offices

Charlie Taylor, the Government's Expert Adviser on Behaviour, was asked by the Secretary of State for Education to conduct a review of school attendance. This publication presents its findings and makes recommendations for improving the attendance of truant children. At Ian Mikardo High School, Tower Hamlets, the students have severe and complex social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) and offers an alternative and successful learning environment

Many have been excluded from other schools and are regarded as unteachable when they join Ian Mikardo. The new purpose-built school gives them a safe haven. This BCSE and HLM will hold a Twilight 'Chatham House Rule' discussion at our offices on 29th May from 6pm to 8pm.

7th June - Cheap schools how? - BCSE Offices

As the capital available for schools is drastically reduced how can we innovate to create effective and efficient solutions?  Cheap schools seem to be the future but what can we practically achieve with the little that we have and prevent ourselves from making long term mistakes due to short term solutions. Come and join our BCSE Members only Chatham House discussion on the reality of cheap schools at our offices in London on the 7th June.

14th June - BCSE all day Seminar - Business Innovation:  From standardisation to baseline design
