BCSE awards celebrate the best in UK school design and construction
The British Council for School Environments (BCSE) has announced the winners of its inaugural awards for best practice in
More than 140 entries vied for the top slots of the awards, announced at a ceremony at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United FC on Tuesday February 12th. Entries were received from architects, contractors, suppliers, local authorities and schools themselves for submission across 15 categories covering key areas of the design, building and equipping of schools.
Ty Goddard, director of the BCSE, said:
"We're delighted to have received so many entries for the awards. The quality of entries led to some rigorous debate amongst the judges, and shows that investment in schools is producing fantastic projects which we can be proud of and all learn from.
"Our thanks go to all the architects, construction firms, suppliers, local authorities, schools and everyone else involved in these projects for being willing to invest their time and energy to ensure our children and teachers have inspiring, functional schools to learn and teach in.
"These awards are a big 'thank you' to all those helping to make our schools better."

1. The BCSE 2008 awards ceremony will take place at Old Trafford, Manchester on February 12 starting at 18.30. Journalists are welcome to attend -- please contact Ben Furner for details.
2. Judging for the awards was in two stages, facilitated by Sharon Wright of Creative Wit with Ty Goddard from the BCSE as advisor. An initial evaluation panel sat in November 2007 and made recommendations for judging day which took place in December 2007. The evaluation panel members were Andy Beard (architect), Geoff Hardwick from BRE, Hal McLean from Cleveratom and Allan Jarvis from AJ Consulting.
